I’ve been spending some time reading about memory management in STM32 projects, and I realized that not every memory issue is as straightforward to debug as it seems.

For example, a project might work fine during initial testing but start behaving strangely when more features are added. It could be a stack overflow, a buffer that’s too large, or a DMA issue caused by placing a buffer in the wrong memory region. Sometimes, the problem isn’t even the total amount of available RAM, but how it’s being used.

While exploring these topics for some embedded electronics content at PCBCool, I started wondering how often these problems come up in actual projects.

For those of you working with STM32 or other Cortex-M microcontrollers, have you run into situations where the firmware worked perfectly at first but started crashing or behaving unpredictably later?

How do you usually track down the cause? Do you start with the linker map file and stack usage, or do you rely more on debugging tools and trial and error?

I’m also curious about flash storage. If you’re saving configuration settings to flash, how do you handle situations where the power goes off in the middle of a write?

Would be great to hear what has worked for you and any debugging mistakes or lessons you’ve learned along the way.
